Abstract
OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the efficacy of breast-conserving operation for early-stage breast cancer.METHODS: Eighty-one patients (group A) with early-stage (stage Ⅰ or Ⅱ) breast cancer were treated with breast-conserving surgery. Group A was compared with 92 contemporaneous patients (group B) who accepted modified radical mastectomy. Two groups were followed by irradiation, chemotherapy and endocrinotherapy. RESULTS: All cases were assessed on cosmetic result one year after operation, and the cosmetic result was good in 90.1%(73/81). Five cases of group B recurred and metastasized. There was no significant difference in recent effect between the two groups, P=0.527 3. CONCLUSIONS: Breast-conserving surgery of early stage breast cancer is similar to modified radical mastectomy, and it is deserved clinical application for early-stage breast cancer because of reliable curative effect and favorable cosmetic result. But the long-term results need more observation.
