Abstract

Since the late 19th century, the ancient Chinese of line has evoked strong repercussion in the West.Meanwhile, traditional Chinese art has experienced the shock of Western art.Through advocacy from including Kang Youwei,Chen Duxiu and Cai Yuanpei,Chinese art circles have turned from indifference and rejection to promotion and acceptance towards Western paintings. While returned scholars such as Li Shutong,Chen Shizeng,Gao Jianfu,Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian are carrying out revolution of Chinese art through their own artistic practice, making valuable attempts to combine Chinese and Western arts.In the meantime, there are still a group of predecessors in painting like Pan Tianshou,Huang Binhong,Zhang Daqian and Qi Baishi who uphold traditional Chinese way and contribute numerous masterpieces worthy of the times. In this context, constant doubt and controversy rise concerning traditional Chinese paintings and its future trend becomes a serious concern in the era of post-modernism and globalization. This paper holds that,in art exchange and dialogue with the world,Chinese art should absorb anything beneficial in foreign arts and stick firmly to the national stand to manifest Chinese elements and characteristics.Only in this way can ancient Chinese art radiate its vigor and gain a seat in the global stage.
