Abstract

In terms of magneto-ionic theory, a self-consistent model of ionospheric electrojet artificially modulated by powerful HF radio waves is presented. Using this model, evolution profile of electron temperature with heating time in ionospheric D/E region, heating and cooling time scale, are calculated in this paper. For specific square wave modulation modes and typical ionospheric conditions, oscillations process of ionospheric conductivity and electrojet are studied in details. Calculated results show that large-scale DC currents flow in lower ionosphere can be efficiently modulated by powerful HF radio waves, and the modulated currents can be acted as radiation source of ELF/VLF radio waves. Finally, some practical problems met in future engineering applications are pointed out.
