Abstract

Taking Landsat MSS(1978),TM(1985,1991,1995,2005 and 2008),and ETM+(2008)images as data resource, and GIS as charting and analysis method to analyze the space and time characteristics of the urban built-up area expansion of Hangzhou and the rationality between the population development and urban built-up area expansion. With such indexes as the average annual growth rate of built-up areas, the centre coordinates, elasticity coefficient, and coefficient of allometric growth, the paper concluded:(1)The periodic characteristics of the urban built-up area expansion in Hangzhou was obvious from 1978 to 2008,namely,the urban built-up area expansion was slow between 1978 and 1991,rapid between 1991 and 2000,high-speed between 2000-2008;(2)The natural environment and policy determine the spatial pattern of built-up area expansion in Hangzhou,as a result, the center of the urban built-up area in Hangzhou has been moving from the south to the northeast;(3)Relationship between the urban built-up area expansion and population development in Hangzhou is reasonable as a whole.
