Abstract
Objective To study the effects of hypericin on proliferation of cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE cells) in vitro and investigate its therapeutic mechanism for proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). Methods human RPE cells were incubated in medium with various serum concentrations containing 0.5 ~5 μM hypericin and then evaluated its proliferation by means of cell counting and MTT colorimetric assay. Results RPE cells proliferation by cell counting of viable cells was dose dependently inhibited by hypericin over a period of 3 days; Tetrazolium salt MTT colorimetric assay also showed hypericin had dose-dependent and time-dependent inhibition against RPE cells proliferation induced by PMA. Conclusion Hypericin has dose-dependent and time-depentent anti-proliferative effects on RPE cells in vitro, indicating it is a potential theraptic drugs for PVR.
