Abstract
The spatial index is the key technique for improving the storage efficiency of spatial databases and the spatial retrieve performance. This paper classified a series of methods on spatial index, including R tree,R+ tree and R~* tree indexes, pointing out that the R~* tree has higher node storage rate and sometimes can avoid node split. Finally,an instance of R~* index was applied in the software of Visual Topo.
