Abstract
Objective To study the role of changes in fibronectin ( FN) expression levels in development of pterygium in fifty Chinese patients. Methods Using normal conjunctiva as control, the FN gene expression levels of mRNA in pterygium were determined by semi - quantitative RT - PCR.The changes in FN protein expression levels were detected by Western blotting. Results 40 of the 50 patients showed elevation of FN protein expression in pterygium, including increased expression levels of FNmRNA in 39 patients. Conclusion Significant increase takes place in pterygium tissue levels of FN mRNA and protein expressions, suggesting the possible development of pterygium.
