Abstract

Effects of concentration of 5,5-dimethylhydantoin(denoted as DMH) as complexing agent and pH value of plating bath on the electrochemical reduction process of Ag~+ in solution were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and quantum chemical calculation as well as scanning electron microscopic observation of coating morphology. Results showed that reduction potential of Ag+ shifted negatively with the addition of the DMH complexing agent. The variation of concentration of the complexing agent and pH value of the plating bath led to changes in the form and stability of the complexing products.Particularly,DMH and Ag+could form stable complexing compounds Ag(C_5 H_7 N_2O_2) and[Ag(C_5H_7N_2O_2)_2]~- when the pH value of the plating bath was fixed at 10.Moreover,compact,smooth,and bright Ag coating could be obtained in proper range of potential.
