Observation of Dexamethasone on the Prophylactic Antiemetic Effect After Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery

Abstract

Objective:To observe the prophylactic antiemetic effect of dexamethasone in postoperative patient controlled analgesia whilst intravenous fentanyl analgesia.Methods:817 patients were scheduled for cosmetic surgery under intravenous anesthesia or inhalation anesthesia.A standard PCIFA was used postoperatively.Patients were randomly assigned to two groups.Droperidol 2.5 mg without dexamethasone was pushed in vein pump(A group);dexamethasone 8mg was given via venous before induction,then dexamethasone 10 mg and droperidol 2.5 mg were pushed in analgesia pump after surgery(B group).Results:The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in group A was 28%,which increased significantly more than in group B(12.2%).The difference between A and B was statistically significant.Conclusion:Dexamethasone combined with droperidol are more effective in prevention of PCIFA induced nausea and vomiting than the single-use droperidol.
