Abstract
In this article poly[(sodium acrylate) co (4 vinylpyridine)] had been prepared by incorporation of a small amount of 4 vinylpyridine in the main chain of poly(sodium acrylate). The molecular weight and composition of copolymers can be effectively controlled by addition of various amounts of initiator and chain transfer agents, and by changing the feed composition and temperature of reaction system up to 98% conversion. Water soluble copolymers with viscosity average molecular weight of 1.0×10 4~7.0×10 5 and sodium acrylate content of 90 mol% were obtained. The copolymers were found to have the amphoteric characteristic by the determination of FT IR and 13 C NMR.
