Abstract

Objective To investigate the safety and efficiency of the selective arterial embolization in the treatment of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. Methods Bilateral carotid artery angiography were performed for demonstration of the arterial supply of tumor in 8 patients with nasopharyngeal fibroangioma. Then a superselective intra-arterial embolization was undertaken in supplying arteries of nasopharyngeal fibroangioma. The supplying arteries originated from maxillary artery branches of external carotid artery, and a part was concerned with internal carotid artery. Results The hemangioma volume of 8 patients was significantly reduced after embolization, five of these underwent operation on 2-3 days after embolization. The amount of bleeding in operation was thus reduced and the tumor was peel off easy. Conclusion The effect of intra-arterial embolization for nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is positive, safe and reliable with few complications.Preoperative application can reduce the surgical trauma, shorten the operation time and lower the postoperative recurrence rate.
