Abstract

In Chinese history, the wars at frontier fortresses in Tang dynasty refer to the wars which burst forth between Tang dynasty and the regimes of the minority nationalities in the frontier regions. The evaluation and the judgement of the nature and character of the wars has close links with proper comments on the Tang poems. The author of this paper holds that in the frontier wars , either Tang dynasty of the regimes of the minority was the first to sent expeditions against the opposing side, but the investigation of the cause of the wars(such as the wars between Tang dynasty and Tujue and those between Tang dynasty and Tibetan regime) shows that Tang dynasty made attacks on the minority nationalities only after being attacked by them. The political purpose of such counterattacks of Tang dynasty was to defense its frontier safety and the military strategy of counterattacks was active defence. So the frontier wars,on the side of the Tang dynasty, were wars of justice. The Tang poems which depict the frontier wars are valuable poems which reflect the patriotic feelings of the Han people at that time.To give a positive assessment of the frontier wars and the Tang poems will not hurt the friendly feelings and the unity of Chinese nationatities. The lofty patriotism is the common and valuable spirit of the Chinese people of all nationalities.
