Abstract

Studies of the luminosity function and mass function in the central 6 degree region of the Virgo cluster are presented. We take radial velocities of galaxies as a criterion, reasonably consider their space distribution, and determine members of the cluster. It is shown that the luminosity function in this region is of Schechter type for all members, Gaussian for the S-type galaxies, where the positions of the peaks seem to move to the faint end and the widths increase along the sequence Sa→Sd. The mass function of the cluster can be well described using a power law just the same as that of stars. Mass and morphology segregation are discussed on the basis of luminosity function and mass function. The total luminosity in this region of the cluster is also presented.
