Integral Structure of Shostakovich's Fourteenth Symphony

Shostakovich's Fourteenth Symphony is the most characteristic in all of his symphonic writings. First, the whole pitch structure consists of only three kernel materials, which form coherence by relating each movement. Second, with the thematic development in different shapes out of a same pattern, the music forms dramatic conflicts, which give the work dynamics for development and a strongly symphonic nature. Last, based on the above, the symphony has been integrated into a sonata form combining the principles of variation,three part form and rondo-like form, which keeps its inner logic in structure throughout.
