Abstract
Quaternary phosphonium salt,tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride, was used as intercalating agent to treat Na-MMT. This paper explored THPC modified montmorillonite under different pH conditions. The morphology, structure, and performance characterization of modified montmorillonite was analyzed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray diffraction(XRD),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) as well as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX). Results showed THPC was more stable and more conducive to be intercalated under acid conditions. After intercalation, the interlayer spacing and thermal stability of this OMMT was increased.
