Abstract
Objective To investigate the clinical value of brainstem auditory evoked potential(BAEP) in the diagnosis of brainstem encephalitis associated with hand foot and mouth disease(HFMD).Methods Thirteen children diagnosed as brainstem encephalitis associated with HFMD in June to October 2011 were selected as observation group. After clinical diagnosis,BAEP and CT examination were conducted. The diagnostic value of BAEP was observed. Results BAEP in the brainstem encephalitis group was positive in 5 patients(38.5%).CT examination identified no positive case.BAEP in the control group revealed no positive case. The differences between the two groups had statistical significance.Six patients in the observation group had WBC of peripheral blood increased, one of whom died of central respiratory failure. Conclusion BAEP is of great clinical value in early diagnosis of brainstem encephalitis associated with HFMD.
