Abstract

As a branch discipline of ecology to study the relationship between forest and its environment, forest ecology is a foundation for silviculture, forest management and protection. The task of forest ecology is to understand the interaction between the forest and its physical and biological environment, to study the classification and distribution of forest communities, growth, development and succession of forest stands, as well as the influences and effects of human activities to forest and it's functions, to provide the technology of sustainable management for forest ecosystems. The development of forest ecology in China is facing the serious practical problems of increment of forest producticty, improvement of environmental safety of national territory, the stabilization of agricultural production and the protection of biodiversities in China, as well as the larger scale theoretical studies for global and regional ecological changes concerning the international research programs.
