Abstract
ObjectiveTo evaluate the use of silicone oil as an intraocular tamponade for traumatic endophthalmitis associated with retinal detachment.Methods16 cases (16 eyes) of traumatic endophthalmi tis associated with retinal detachment were analyzed retrospectively. All of them underwent silicone oil tamponade.ResultsDuring a follow-up of 3-25 months, intraocular infection of 16 cases were controlled, the detached reti nas were reattached in 11 eyes(68.8%),locally detached in 3 eyes(18.8%) and rede tached in 2 eyes(12.5%).Corrected vision was 0.04 or worse in 11 eyes, and better than 0.05 in 5 eyes.ConclusionSilicone oil tamponade is an ef fective method for the management of traumatic endophthalmitis associated with r etinal detachment. The major complication is recurrent retinal detachment and pro liferative vitreoretinopathy after silicone oil tamponade.
