Abstract
Objective To investigate the curative effect of percutaneous vertebroplasty(PVP) in the treatment of symptomatic Vertebral hemangiomas(VHs).Materials and Methods35 consecutive patients had been treated with PVP,for a total of 44 vertebral bodies affected by VH.All the clinical data and imaging materials were analyzed retrospectively.29 patients(82.9%)complained of back pain.6 patients(17.1%)had neurological deficit because of pathologic fracture in the vertebral bodies.The preprocedural and postprocedual pain degree of all patients had been evaluated with the visual analog scale(VAS).Patients had outpatient visits at 3-6 months after operation.After 6 months,telephone interviews or outpatient visits had been adopted.ResultsThe amount of cement used was from 1.5 to 11 ml per vertebral body,mean 5.5 ml.Paravertebral and discal cement leakage was observed in 5 and 2 patients respectively.No pulmonary embolism was occurred and no other serious complications were observed.Preoperatively the mean score of visual analogue scale(VAS) was 6.8±1.1,and postoperatively the mean score was 2.6±0.7.All patients showed significant relief of pain(P0.05).ConclusionPercutaneous vertebroplasty is a minimal invasive,effective and safe technique in the treatment of symptomatic vertebral hemangiomas.
