Preservative treatment and function restoration of residual Crowns and roots.

Objective To investigate the indications and methods of preservative treatment of residual crowns and roots,as well as the kinds,methods,problems and solutions of function restoration of porcelain-fused-to-metal crown.Methods 807 residual crowns and roots of 538 patients were enrolled in the study.After the completion of preservative treatment,different methods of function restoration were adopted.The length of follow-up was 1~5 years.Results The treatment was successful in 798 teeth and failed in 9 teeth,the main complications were root fracture,looseness,detachment and longitudinal break of the basal teeth root,etc.Conclusion The preservative treatment and function restoration of residual crowns and roots is an ideal treatment methods,but following conditions are necessary: ① periodontopathy and periapical disease can be thoroughly cured;② The base of the teeth should have good fixation and resistant figure;③ The restoration of residual roots and crowns can achieve relatively satisfactorily chewing function and esthetic effects;④ absorption of alveolar bone can be dvoided or decreased.
