Abstract

The gas-assisted polymer extrusion is a new type of extrusion method which greatly reduces die swell and die pressure. The study on die swell in the gas-assisted polymer extrusion process was conducted on the self-made gas-assisted extrusion device. The comparison between typical and gas-assisted extrusion showed that die swell was greatly reduced in gas-assisted extrusion. The speed field and pressure field of polymer in the die during gas-assisted extrusion were obtained with the CFD(general) FEM code FIDAP.The results indicated that the speed and pressure of different points across section of extruded product at the outlet of die were respectively identical.
