The Rhetorical Device of Antithesis in Love is a Fallacy

Abstract

The rhetorical device of antithesis in English is one that is balanced in structure,condensed in content and similar to that of Chinese. The American writer Max Shulman fully employs antithesis from global design to local writing techniques in his masterpiece,Love is a Fallacy,making it an eternally popular classic.This essay probes into the different antitheses in its title and theme of the story,its main characters and plot,its art of giving names,and in that between conversational and non-conversational paragraphs.Some typical examples of antithesis from the story are put at the end of the essay for better appreciation.
