Abstract

The Parc de la Villette is restudied in this paper from the viewpoint of the integration of landscape and urban space, and the ideas of landscape urbanism embodied in the two projects by Bernard Tschumi and Rem Koolhaas are analyzed. The designers read and operated the forms of contemporary cities with a landscape model, focused on their horizontality and layered systems, admitted and catalyzed the landscape of events by constructing the frame of infrastructures, permitted forms to change over time, and thus achieved dynamic and open plannings. All these constructed new landscapes of cities and represented new images of ecology. Today these two projects are deemed to be the earliest practices of landscape urbanism, which provided new potentials and possibilities for the development of contemporary cities.
