Pathological Research of the Contralateral Ovary in Stage Ia Ovarian Cancer

Objective To explore the pathological changes of the contralateral ovary in patients with stage Ⅰa ovarian cancer. Method The ovarian tissues taken from 42 control patients who had ovaries resections due to benign diseases were compared with the ovarian tissue which obtained from the contralateral ovary of 42 ovarian cancer cases. Pathological indexes including inclusion cysts were studied. Results In both study group and control group, the mean numbers of inclusion cysts were 3(0-40) vs 1(0-12),the frenquency of serous metaplasia was 66.7% vs 34.6%. The difference was significant. An age related increase in the number of inclusion cysts was noted in the cancer patients but not in the control group. Conclusions Ovarian inclusion cysts could play an important role in the genesis of ovarian cancer.
