Abstract
Spatial scale is an important characteristic of spatial data.We observe and measure the geographic phenomena at a certain scale and then sample the spatial data, model and analyze them. This paper first discusses the relationship between scale and spatial cognition,Then it delivers the meanings and types of spatial scale according to map, analysis and phenomena aspects.Scaling problem is a hotpot in geographic database, which affects spatial pattern, map generalization and geographic representation. Finally the paper gives some illustrations.
