Abstract
The range and period of the popularity of polo in the Tang Dynasty were analyzed with contemporary social psychology. It is found that the fundamental reason why polo was just popularized in upper class society is that only those who were prosperous and unoccupied could have enough money for this kind of highly standardized and consumed sport at that time when the feudal economy was flourishing. The ups and downs of polo in ancient China is a typical display of the regular pattern of “normal curve” popularizing nowadays, and has formed a whole period of popularity. The development of polo in the Tang Dynasty represents the rising and even the most prosperous stage of this period.
