Abstract
Objective To investigate the influence of lead on nitric oxide(NO) levels of the cortex and hippocampus in the develo ping rat brain. Methods The rats from the day 13 to 19 of gestation were treated with lead acetate by intraperitoneal injection. The levels of protein and NO in cerebral cortex and hippocampus of the new born rat brain were determined. Results The contents of protein in the hippocampus of rat offsprings decreased with the increasing of lead exposure. There was no influence on the contents of protein in cortex. In the normal developing period the NO levels in the hippocampus were higher than those in the cerebral cortex. The NO levels in cerebral cortex and hippocampus of the rat offsprings enhanced in a dose dependent manner by lead. Conclusion The hippocampus might be more easily damaged by lead in comparison with the cortex. The neurotoxic effects of lead on the developing brain might be associated with disturbance of the homeostasis of the NO levels.
