Abstract
AIM: To compare the miosis and intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering effects of timolol-pilocarpine fixed-ratio combinations between domestic eyedrops (0.5 % timolol and 2 % pilocarpine nitrate) and imported eye drops (0.5 % timolol and 2 % pilocarpine hydrochloride) on pupil and intraocular pressure (IOP) in rabbits. METHODS: Normal rabbits and water laoding rabbits were used to measure the pupil diameter and IOP, respectively. RESULTS: Domestic and imported combined timolol-pilocarpine eye drops had marked miosis in normal rabbits from 15 min up to 120 min after administration. After water loading to rabbits, domestic and imported combined timolol-pilocarpine eye drops also significantly lowered the IOP from 30 to 120 min compared with the control group. The significant differences in pupil diameter and IOP were not observed between domestic and imported eye drops. CONCLUSION: Both domestic and imported combined timolol-pilocarpine eye drops containing different salt bases of pilocarpine possess significant miosis and IOP lowering effects with no differences in pharmacological potency and action duration.
