Abstract

Objective To investigate the changes in serum concentration of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in aging Chinese people. Methods The level of DHEA and IL-6 in serum in 140 healthy subjects was measured by immunometric enzyme immunoassay. Results The DHEA and IL-6 concentrations appeared highest (25.79 ± 9.54nmol/l) and lowest (0.82 ± 0.66 pg/ml) in the group of 18-24 years old, respectively. DHEA in serum gradually decreased with aging (r =-0.64, P0.001), but IL-6 level in serum gradually increased with aging (r=0.61,P0.001). The lowest level of DHEA was 6.57±5.73nmol /l and the highest level 0f IL-6 was 5.20±2.59 pg/ml respectively in the group over 85 years old. DHEA and IL-6 were negatively correlated (r=- 0.44,P0.001). Conclusions Our results indicate that DHEA and IL-6 may be effective biological markers of human aging.
