Abstract
The instability criterion of strength reduction method was discussed. The instability criterion had a great influence on the safety factor, but has a little influence on the shape and position of the critical sliding surface. On this basis, the finite element iteration method for the safety factor of slopes based on the strength reduction method was proposed. The critical sliding surface was searched by use of the strength reduction method, and then the safety factor of given slopes of the sliding surface was solved by the finite element iteration method.A conclusion is drawn that the proposed method fully combines the advantages of the strength reduction method and the iteration method. It is fast, accurate and practical in solving the safety factor for the slope stability.
