Therapeutic effects of surgery for treating children obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome

Abstract

Objective:To discuss the clinical results by performing adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy for treating obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS) in children.Methods:Among 61 cases of pediatric OSAHS diagnosed by overnight polysomnography(PSG),1 case underwent tonsillectomy,53 cases did tonsillectomy plus adenectomy and 7 cases did simple adenoidectomy.All cases were followed up for 3-6 months after treatment,and the questionnaire on quality of life for children with obstructive sleep apnea-18 items(OSA-18) was used to evaluate the clinical effects.Results:Snoring,sleep apnea and open-mouth breathing were all markedly improved after surgery in the most of children.OSA-18 displayed that the whole indicators(85.25%),sleep disorders(96.72%) and physical distress(81.96%) were markedly improved.Conclusion:Tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy are the effective method in treatment of pediatric OSAHS,which can effectively prevent complications and greatly improve the quality of life of children OSAHS.
