Abstract

Using data from the 2000 and 2010 Population Censuses of Beijing Municipality, and taking the 16 districts and counties, and the 320 township-level units of Beijing at the time of the Sixth Census as research objects, this paper, from the demographic perspective, analyses the development and causes of Beijing's suburbanization between the Fifth and Sixth Census. This study shows that suburbanization in Beijing had a significant development during the period from the Fifth Census to the Sixth Census.Suburbanization continued to advance in Beijing's inner suburbs. The population growth rate decreased in the near- inner suburbs, while it increased in the areas just outside the near- inner suburbs. The population growth rate of the outer suburbs, which were influenced significantly by suburbanization, has exceeded that of the inner suburbs.A substantial increase in immigrant population and Beijing's registered population, whose household registrations are not within the same districts or counties where they live, had a significant role in promoting the process of Beijing's suburbanization.Suburbanization is an irreversible trend of future urban development of Beijing. It has important significance to the sound development of Beijing's suburbanization to understand correctly the status of Beijing's suburbanization and to take effective measures to solve problems in the process of suburbanization.
