Contemporary Neo-Taoist Ethical Values

Abstract

The doctrine of contemporary Neo-Taoist ethical values is an inheritance and expansion of ancient Taoist ethical thoughts. This can be seen as a new interpretation for Taoist ethical thoughts, for which Lao Zi is the representative. Taoist ethical ideas can be summarized into three principles of advocating simplicity against rejecting hypocrisy, modesty against arrogance, and abstinence against greed. On the other hand, with Wang Bi as the leading figure of the Wei-Jin Taoist School, it proposed the combination of Confucianist and Taoist thoughts-building Confucianist benevolence and rite upon Taoist humanity of natural simplicity. All these ideas should be absorbed by contemporary Neo-Taoists.
