Abstract

Objective To investigate the relevance Of serum cytokines, acute phase proteins and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) patients with associated depression. Methods Serum levels of interleukin-1β(IL-1β),interleukin-6(IL-6),tumor necrosis factor-alpla(TNFα),haptoglobin(Hp) and transferrin(Tf) were measured in normal controls and COPD patients by using methods of enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay(ELISA)and scatter rate nephelometry. Results 1.The incidence of depression in patients with COPD was significantly higher than the control group.(P0.05);2.The levels of IL-1β,IL-6,TNF-α,Hp in patients without depression were much higher than in healthy controls, while COPD patients with depression is the most higher.(P0.05)Determination of serum CRP were not found significant differences(P0.05);3.The serum levels of IL-1β,IL-6,TNF-α,Hp,and Tf are significant different in COPD patients with different degrees of depression(P0.05);4.Serum IL-1β,IL-6 and Hp levels correlated positively and significantly with the severity of COPD,Serum Tf levels were negatively and significantly related to the severity of COPD(P0.05).Conclusion A large amount of inflammatory cells exist in the airway of Patients with COPD,and the cytokines, acute phase proteins which are released by inflammatory cells plays an important role in the pathogenesis of COPD patients with depression.
