Abstract
In order to adapt the development of Internet, IPv6 is a new generation protocol based on IPv4. Firstly , the limitation of IPv4 has been analyzed from the amount of address, the efficiency of IP packet route transmit etc in this paper, Secondly, the important difference between IPv6 and IPv4 has been discussed from the pack head structure, format of address and address classification etc. based on the studying of IPv6 protocol's structure and characters, Finally, a prospect of the development of IPv6 has been looked into. This paper has some guidance value for the application of IPv6 protocol.
