Abstract

Commended as ’the master of great learning and integrity’ during late Qing Dynasty, Yu Yue devoted to the task of restoring the textual criticism style of study prevailed during the emperor Qianlong and Jiaqing’s period, dedicated all his life to engage in the scholarship on the Confucian classics and the various schools of thought and their exponents during the period from pre-Qin times to the early years of the Han Dynasty. Since he had the courage to seek new knowledge and to refute the fallacies, Yu Yue had made remarkable achievements. However, he was a conservative and reactionary scholar to a certain extent. Therefore, today we should comment at the game time on Yu Yue: on the one hand, we should fully affirm his scholarship, on the other hand, we need to point out and criticize his conservative thinking and reactionary viewpoint.
