Abstract

Objective To study the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance urography(MRU) for ureteral obstruction. Methods 86 patients with ureteral obstruction were performed MRU. Their image findings were retrospectively analyzed and compared with clinical diagnosis or surginal findings and pathology. Results 86 cases of ureteral obstruction included 18 ureteral carcinoma, 22 ureteral calculus , 12 benign ureteral stricture , 17congenital ureteral stricture, 1 retrocaval ureter, 2 ureteral polyp, 6 extrinsic diseases resulted obstructions, and 8 invasions of ureter form bladder carcinoma. All MRU could documente sites, shapes and features of ureteral obstruction. The accuracy of MRU in the detection of the level of ureteral obstruction was 100%. The accuracy for evaluating the causes of obstruction was 77.9%.Conclusions MRU was a safe, noninvasive and effective method in the diagnosis of ureteral obstruction and could accurately define the level of obstruction. Combination with the primitive images, the specificity for the diagnosis of obstruction was also high.
