Treatment of type C intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus with biplate via

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional outcome following internal fixation of intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus(AO Type C) with biplates via osteotomy of olecranon.Methods A retrospective evaluation was carried out.35 type C intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus patients were treated over 6 years period.Analysis of the results was based on the medical records,pre-operative and postoperative radiographs and clinical review with a mean follow-up of 16 months.Radiographic evaluation of the quality of reduction was carried out using a grading system.Clinical outcome was assessed using the Mayo Elbow Performance index.Results 25 patients(71.4%) had an excellent or good outcome,8 patients(22.9%)a fair outcome and 2 patients(5.7%)had a poor result.The mean arc of flexion was(95.4±13.6)°(range 53°to 135°).24 patients(68.6%)were able to return to their pre-injury level of occupation and activity.28 patients(80.0%)were satisfied with the final outcome.Conclusion Internal fixation of type C intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus with biplates via osteotomy of olecranon is an effective procedure with an excellent or good functional outcome in most patients.
