A controlled study of venlafaxine and amitriptyline in treatment of aged depression

Abstract

Objective To compare the efficacy and side effects between venlafaxine and amitriptyline in the treatment of aged depression.Method 69 patients who met CCMD-2-R for aged depression were randomly assigned to two groups.One group was treated with venlafaxine and the other with amitriptyline for 6 weeks.The efficacy was assessed with Hamilton depressive scale(HAMD) and the clinical global impression scale(CGI),and the side effect was evaluated with treatment emergent symptom scale(TESS).Results The findings indicated that the efficacy of venlafaxine was better than that of amitriptyline,and venlafaxine took effect more quickly and its side effects were less and mild.Conclusion It suggests that venlafaxine might be recommended as one of first-line antidepressants in treatment of aged depression.
