Abstract

Based on the observations of temperature, salinity, light penetration, and chlorophyll a in the southern Yellow sea in August 2008,the vertical distribution of chlorophyll a and its relationships with temperature, salinity, and light penetration are analyzed. It is shown in the analysis results that chlorophyll a may have one or multiple peaks in the distribution. Those patterns can be divided into 10 types, according to the vertical distribution characteristics of the water layers where the peaks are respectively situated. It is also learnt that the vertical distribution of chlorophyll a is related to the environmental factors, such as seawater stratification, light penetration, and nutrient content.
