Abstract
Objective To observe the ralationship between complication mortality rate and AIS/ISS in elderly chest trauma patients. Methods AIS(90)-ISS were used to compare 63 elderly chest trauma patients(≥60 years) with 203 nonelderly patients (≤59 years). Results In the elderly group the mean ISS was 14.5 ±7.6, five cases died(7.9%); in the nonelderly group the mean ISS was 17.9±11, seven died(3.4%). There was no significant difference in mortality rate and ISS in the two groups. Mortality rate rose when ISS was 16 in the elderly. Complication increaced in the elderly(ISS25)compared with nonelderly( P 0.01). The mortality rate was related to the number of injury region and MAIS. It was obviously higher in the elderly group when the number of injury region and MAIS were4. Pre-existing diseases were important factor affecting mortality in the elderly. Conclusions Mortality rate and complication are related to ISS in elderly.Since there was no significant difference in mortality rate and ISS in the two groups, the age standard of the elderly(≥60) should be modified.
