Abstract

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effects of irrigating therapy with magnolia injection (MNI)on chronic maxillary sinusitis experimentally induced among rabbits. Methods The animal model with chronic maxillary sinusitis was prepared by placing a piece of glutin sponge into the sinus cavity via the route of its front wall and injecting some quantity of Staphylococcus aureus into it. Then,the modeling animals were divided into 3 groups,each with 8rabbits. The animals in first group were irrigated into the sinus cavity with 2ml of NS as negativecontrols(NC) ,ones in the second group were irrigated into the cavity with gentamycin(80000U/ 2ml)as positive controls(PC) ,and those in the third group were irrigated into the cavity with 2ml of MNI(TG). All the animals were irrigated 4 times in total,once every other day. On the tenth day,all the animals were put into death for bacteria culturing of secretion from the sinus cavity and for histopathological assay of the sinus mucosa. Results Positive culturing was seen in 3 sinus cavities of TG,13 cavities of PG and 14 cavities of NC. On the other hand,all the sinus mucosa of three groups showed inflammatory reaction. However, the degree of inflammatory reaction was largely varied among these groups,with very mild inflammation in those of TG and severe inflammatory changes in those of either NC or PC. Conclusion MNI holds significant therapeutic effects on chronic sinusitis when used as local irrigating solution.
