Abstract

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of intravitreal and subconjunctival injection of triamcinolone acetonide for macular retinal edema. METHODS The visual acuity, intraocular pressure, slit lamp,FFA and OCT of all patients were checked before treatment. One month,3 and 6 months after treatment,FFA and OCT were checked again. RESULTS In the subconjunctival group, the visual acuity 1 week and 1 month after treatment improved (P 0.05). The visual acuity 3 months and 6 months after treatment improved significantly (P0.01). And the visual acuity was stable after 3 month's treatment. In the Intravitreal group, the visual acuity 1 week after treatment didn't improved (P0.05). The visual acuity 1 month and 3 month after treatment are improved than pre-treatment (P 0.05). The visual acuity 6 months after treatment are improved significantly than pre-treatment (P0.01). The visu-al acuity 6 months after treatment between two groups was not different(P0.05). In the subconjunctival group, there was macular edema in 22 eyes before treatment. Macular edema disappeared in 13,20 and 20 eyes respectively 1 month,3 months, and 6months after treatment. The effective rate was 59.9%,90.9% and 90.9% respectively. In the Intravitreal group, there was macular edema in 20 eyes before treatment. Macular edema disappeared in 9,12 and 13 eyes respectively 1 month,3 months, and 6months after treatment. The effective rate was 45% ,60% and 65% re-spectively. There was difference for macular edema disappearance between the two groups after 1,3 and 6months' treatment by X2 test. (P0.001) In the subconjunctival group, the retinal thickness (measured by OCT) was different between 1 month treatment and pre-treatment.(P0.05) It was significant different between 3,6 months treatment and pre-treatment.(P0.01) In the Intravitreal group, the retinal thickness was not different between 1 month treatment and pre-treatment.(P0.05) It was significant different between 3,6 months treatment and pre-treatment.(P0.01) There was no difference between two groups pre-treatment and after 6months' treatment.(P0.05). CONCLUSIONS Intravitreal and subconjunctival injection of triamcinolone acetonide can improve the visual acuity in the patients with macular edema. And can also cure or reduce the macular edema.
