The Relationship Between Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor,Angiogenesis and the Development of Colorectal Carcinoma

Abstract

Objective:To investigate the relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF),angiogenesis and the development of colorectal carcinoma.Methods:VEGF protein expression and microvessel density(MVD) in 62 colorectal cancers were examined by means of immunohistochemical staining.MVD and VEGF expression and their relationships were analyzed together with histologic types,Dukes period and metastasis of colorectal carcinoma.Results:MVD and VEGF expression positively correlated with Dukes period ( P 0 05),lymph node metastasis( P 0 05) and distant metastasis( P 0 01),but no significant correlation with the histologic type( P 0 05).There was a positive correlation between MVD and VEGF expression ( r =0 89).Conclusions:VEGF is highly related to angiogenesis of colorectal carcinoma and promotes growth,invasion and metastasis of co lorectal carcinoma.VEGF expression or MVD may be one of the predictors for the biological behavior of colorectal carcinoma.
