Investigation of the clinical manifestations and EMG features of critical illness polyneuropathy and myopathy

Objective To investigate the clinical manifestations and EMG features of critical illness polyneuropathy and myopathy clinical.Methods The clinical data and EMG results were analyzed from 6 cases with critical illness polyneuropathy and myopathy.Results All of Patients were transferred to ICU due to severe infections,underwent intubation and mechanical ventilation.All cases were symmetrical weakness,paresthesia,and reduced tendon reflexes generally.EMG results showed the amplitude of Motor and sensory compound potential decreased or absent.Meanwhile,4 patients were complicated by myopathy-like changes.Conclusion Critical illness polyneuropathy and myopathy was a common complication in severe illness with intubation and mechanical ventilation.Electrophysiological examination was useful in diagnosis of the disease.Early recognition and treatment may improve the prognosis of the disease.
