Itraconazole and amphotericin B in the treatment of fungal infections after chemotherapy

Objective:To compare the outcome and side-effects of the patients who received itraconazole or amphotericin B because of fungal infections after chemotherapy.Methods:Thirty patients with fungal infections who were suffered from solid tumors and received chemotherapy were treated with itraconazole or amphotericin B. Of 30 patients,13 patients were received autologous hematopoiectic stem cell transplantation combined with high dose radiotherapy/chemotherapy. Seventeen cases were received intensive chemotherapy.Response to treatment and side-effects were evaluated after the treatment. Results:The efficiency of itraconazole and amphotericin B were 86.8% and 93.4%(P=0.482). More side effects were found in patients received amphotericin B, such as fever and shiver(33.3%)and hypokalemia(39.6%), there was siginificant difference between them(P0.05). Conclusion:The outcome of the patients who received itraconazole or amphotericin B is similar. More side effects are found in patients received amphotericin B.
