Abstract

Basied on the Chinese ancient literature, this paper analyses the possibility and reality of Chinese private gardens in PreQin the Dynasty, and finds three forms of private gardens:plebeian garden, patrician garden and anchoretic mountain and water garden, which existed in the slavery age. According to these conclusions, the time of the beginning of Chinese personal gardens will be brought forward to the Shang Dynasty or the Zhou Dynasty.
