Abstract
The doctrine of the mean is regarded not only as a part of Zhou Zuo-ren's world outlook but as the basic principle of his methodology.This paper emphatically researches the Chinese-foreign cultural origins of the doctrine of the mean that Zhou Zuo-ren opted for and attempts to objectively appraise the intricate influence of this golden mean on his philosophy of life and his outlook on cultural artistry and his literary creations.
