Abstract
Objective To analyze the variations of bone mineral density(BMD) and the incidence of osteoporosis by means of BMD measurements in healthy population in Xuzhou so as to improve the accuracy of osteoporosis diagnosis and provide reference for the prophylaxis and treatment of osteoporosis. Methods BMD determination by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA) and measurements of the femur neck and lumbar vertebrae(2-4) were conducted in 1572 healthy people who were grouped at a 5-year age interval. An increase by 2.5 SD from the BMD peak was designated the criterion for osteoporosis diagnosis and statistical analysis in gender and age groups. Results The BMD peak occurred between 30 and 35 years of age in women and declined afterwards, whereas at around 35 years of age in men.A remarkable decrease in BMD was shown in women as of 55 years of age.The female groups had higher osteoporosis incidence than the male groups. Conclusion Popularization of the awareness of the prophylaxis and treatment of osteoporosis should be enhanced for women before 55 and men before 65,while for the subsequent years, relevant interventions should be taken to reduce the osteoporosis incidence.
