Abstract

The paper maintains that Tao Yuan-ming, poet of the later Eastern Jin Dynasty, elaborates on such life themes as personal achievement and soul-destroying dilemmas. With nature and metaphysical sentiments integrated into his works, Tao has initiated the genre of eclogue for Chinese literature. He has provided guidelines for the life pursuit of later-generation intellectuals and the Chinese people at large by his modeling aloofness and frankness.
